DialogForum: Say it simple!
with English Subtitles
Journalists and representatives of people with disabilities are present at this discussion. They also try to speak in plain language themselves during the discussion. This television discussion is part of the ORF "DialogForum". You can watch this program on 9 March at 11.00 a.m. on ORF III or online at ORF ON and zukunft.ORF.at and listen to it on ORF Sound.
In plain language, difficult topics are explained in a way that is easy to understand. In the discussion, experts talk about how to write good news in plain language. The experts are Nicole Braunstein, Ramona Arzberger, Sophie Lecheler and Anna Mark.
Nicole Braunstein works for "Lebenshilfe Österreich". She represents people with disabilities. Ramona Arzberger works for the magazine "andererseits". The magazine is available in easy language. Sophie Lecheler is a media researcher at the University of Vienna. Anna Mark works at ORF on the subject of plain language.
It is very important that texts about science and politics are also available in plain language. Because a third of all adults in Austria have problems understanding difficult texts. That's what Anna Mark says. All four experts say that news is often difficult to understand for some people. More services in plain language are needed so that people with disabilities and the elderly can also understand the news well. This is also important for people who are just learning German.
