01 | JANUARY - Identity Those Up There Never Come to Us - Kim Kadlec, " Am Schauplatz ". In the summer of 2020, journalists are receiving weekly reports of mass layoffs at major Austrian industrial companies. Sometimes these become headlines in daily newspapers. But the journalistic attention does not last long. News about plant closures in rural areas finds little place in daily journalism, which is usually centered on the capital. Why? The editorial departments are thinly staffed. The plants are often located many kilometers away from Vienna. And the news about a single plant closure is not attributed great importance nationwide.
Meanwhile, dramas are playing out in the regions. This is because the plants were usually the last major employers in the region. Often, several family members lose their jobs at the same time because they were all employed at the plant. The social identity of thousands of employees, which was closely linked to years of work at the plant, is shaken. Suppliers, restaurants and retail businesses in the areas are struggling with economic losses. The purchasing power of their customers, who are now suddenly out of work, is dropping sharply. Entire regions are struggling with economic decline.
Those affected feel betrayed by politicians. They feel neither seen nor heard by the media. Corporate bosses, politicians and journalists are described as "those up there" who are far away, who are not tangible, who don't come here, who don't see how things really are, as those affected describe it. The journalists become "the others" - who know nothing about their own social identity, have nothing in common with it, do not belong.
"Am Schauplatz" is a television format that aims to counteract this development. We editors have the opportunity and the resources to travel to those regions where social tensions and social problems arise that are not (yet) the focus of the general public.
For months on end, we travel to areas affected by mass layoffs. In Styria, Upper Austria and Tyrol, we record people's experiences on camera. In the resulting television report, we let them have their say at eye level as experts on the realities of their lives. We also ask employers about their position and are able to draw parallels between developments in different regions. This gives us the opportunity to place individual experiences in the context of global structural change.
The 50-minute "Am Schauplatz" report entitled "Die letzte Schicht" (The Last Shift) on ORF2 is watched by around 700,000 viewers. In the report, people see in an unembellished way what is happening in their region and elsewhere and what effects this has on our society. It is "their" ORF that shows this as part of its public service mandate. It is "their" ORF whose reporters ask about their problems, their experiences, their positions. It is "their" ORF journalists who make their social group heard ... and no longer "the ones up there".
