In Europe expenditure for online advertising overtook investments in TV commercials in 2015. This trend impacts not only broadcasters, but also the entire TV industry, as a new report from the EBU's Media Intelligence Service (MIS) suggests.

The report also focusses on the consequences for Public Service Media (PSM) companies, whose advertising revenue has fallen from 16 to ten percent over the course of ten years. Roberto Suárez Candel, Head of MIS, states that advertising revenue provides a small but essential contribution to PSM funding in Europe.

Over 80% of Europe's PSM organisations are allowed to generate revenue from advertising and as the study suggests, it has negative effects on the whole TV market, if advertisement bans are imposed on PSM. As it could be observed in France and Spain, where advertising prohibitions are intact expenditure for commercials largely moves away from TV to the online area.
