In the United States Paula Kerger, president of Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) warns that numerous public television stations will have to go off air, if Congress agrees to the Trump administration's budget planning to zero out federal funding for public broadcasting.

"PBS will exist in some form, but a number of stations will go off the air," Kerger states regarding the possible yearly loss of over $440 million of funding. The Trump administration has already made the same recommendation in last year's budget plan, but failed to see it through.
The administration in Washington argues that the funding makes up for an average of 15% of the stations' budgets and that they could "make up the shortfall by increasing revenues from corporate sponsors, foundations and members."

Especially the survival of PBS stations in rural areas would be threatened by the loss of the funding, as they receive over 50% of their budget from federal funding, says Kruger further. Kerger also indicates that only PBS stations offer educational programmes which would be lost, because commercial outlets do not cover this area.
PBS stations now rally for public support to continue the funding with the "Protect My Public Media" campaign.
