"Austria - The Whole Story" narrates the history of the country from its beginnings to the present day and sheds light on the major questions of each era. Season 1 begins with the first mention of Austria in 996 and tells the story of Austria up to the 18th century and is viewable on ORF ON.

Public Value Check

ORF Public Value has asked scientists from Austrian educational institutions to assess the value and benefit of the award-winning work. The quotes:

"Creatively prepared historical documentaries that address the connections between historical developments and today's achievements are important building blocks for democracy education. Focusing on historically sometimes overlooked yet influential women is timely and important. Storytelling that makes history tangible through individual fates brings seemingly dusty history into the present."
Mag.a Gisela Reiter, FH Wien

"The ORF documentary series "Austria - The Whole Story" is a significant public service format that contributes to historical education and promotes understanding of the political foundations of Austria. The series helps to understand Austrian identity by preparing central events such as the Revolution of 1848 and its role in the emergence of democracy. In times when democracy is under pressure, this historical analysis strengthens awareness of democratic processes and political participation.

The series offers a scientifically sound and differentiated portrayal of events, supported by expert interviews, which enhances the credibility of the series. In an era of fake news, ORF ensures reliable information with fact-based, high-quality productions. The mix of scenic reenactments, expert interviews, and archival material makes complex historical topics accessible and understandable, appealing to a wide audience - from students to older people. Thus, ORF fulfills its educational mandate and creates cultural added value."
Dr.in Denise Voci B.A., M.A., University of Klagenfurt

Further contributions to the discourse on public service quality and the documentation of Public Value are published by ORF in the publication series "PUBLIC VALUE TEXTS." Over 300 scientists and media professionals have published relevant views on the quality debate there. On the topic of the relevant Public Value category, for example, by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Karl Vocelka, Dr.in Corina Wenzel on the "Cultural Memory Function" or by DDr.in Julia Wippersberg ("Public Value - Identity Formation on Austrian and European Level through Broadcasting Programs"; previous Public Value reports have also dealt with aspects of contemporary history on TV, such as Tom Matzek on "Identity - Measuring Austria" in the report 22/23.

Identity as a Public Value Category

The category "Identity" documents ORF's performance in Austrian contemporary history, tradition, customs, sports, and social development. The category is based on the following passages from ORF regulations:

ORF Law
§ 4. (1) The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation must ensure the promotion of Austrian identity in the context of European history and integration. (4) Furthermore, it must pay special attention to the cultural uniqueness, history, and political and cultural independence of Austria as well as the federal structure of the Republic in the production of radio and television programs and other offerings.

ORF Code of Conduct

The authenticity of the portrayal must be guaranteed in every case. Journalistically relevant circumstances for the creation of a contribution must be made recognizable: e.g., special conditions, circumstances, and developments during filming or when (due to trade secrets) material must be used that the person or institution to which the contribution refers has provided. The audience must be able to rely on the fact that any manipulative portrayal or staging is avoided in the reporting.

ORF Quality Profile

Austrian German as part of Austrian identity should be reflected in ORF entertainment formats, as well as gender-appropriate language as an act of equality between women and men.
