03 - How do you prove your independence, Ms. Laufer & Mr. Wolf?

The duty and right to independence are formulated in several regulations of the ORF. Already in §1 of the ORF Act, the legislator has established that the ORF "must ensure the independence of persons and bodies of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation, who are entrusted with the tasks of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation." And in §4 of the same law, it becomes even clearer: "Independence is not only a right of journalistic or program-designing employees but also their duty. Independence means independence from state and party influence, but also independence from other media, whether electronic or print media, or whether political or economic lobbies," it states. Independence is also reflected in a program principle according to §5, here as a description of ORF information. This "must be comprehensive, independent, impartial, and objective." But how to prove that? A question that leads to key members of the ORF News. To Armin Wolf and Margit Laufer.

The audience, judging by the viewer numbers, is certainly satisfied with what is offered. The "ZIB2", at its launch in 1975, was the first TV news program not presented by announcers but by journalists, and today it is one of the most-watched information programs of the ORF.

The "ZIB2" has now added an additional, irregularly broadcast program: The "ZIB2 History" deals with historically significant events on the occasion of relevant anniversaries. The "ZIB2" is particularly known for the program's interviews: They are among the longest live interviews in ORF television information.

Armin Wolf has already written about the interviews in a previous contribution to the Public Value Report. In the "ZIB2 Podcast," you can listen to the studio conversations immediately after the broadcast - for recorded interviews, always the uncut original version.
