Michaela Mild organizes the multilingual speech competition "Sag's Multi" for ORF. Vincent Pellegrini, Sediqa Saeedi, and Tobias Gross participated. In the "Sag's Multi" speech competition, students from all over Austria compete against each other-or rather with each other. The special feature: the speeches are multilingual. "Linguistic diversity opens doors, builds bridges, and promotes intercultural dialogue.
"Sag's Multi" is more than a project-it has become a movement that raises awareness of the importance of multilingualism in our society and gives young people the opportunity to share and celebrate their language skills and cultural backgrounds," says Dino Schosche, the initiator of the "Platform Diversity Alliance," which awarded "Sag's Multi" with the
Vienna Diversity Award.
Public Value Check
ORF Public Value asked scientists from Austrian educational institutions to assess the value and benefit of the award-winning work. The quotes:
"Formats in which young people can actively shape media and gain visibility must remain a permanent part of television. "Sag's Multi" pursues exactly this goal-it gives young voices space, promotes exchange over different languages and narratives, and enriches the media landscape. The focus on these young speakers has been particularly inspiring for me!"
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Sophie Lecheler, University of Vienna
"The diversity of the different languages spoken in Austria finds an appealing framework with the event "Sag's Multi" and offers students a platform to actively participate. If there is to be a place where political and social participation can take place, it is such events that can spark the interest of young people. It would be desirable to bring projects in the field of media literacy to the forefront and offer the opportunity to make them more visible in the media. Raising awareness of different life worlds and linguistic spaces creates acceptance and ideally leads to a better understanding among all members of society."
Mag. Gisela Reiter, FH Wien
"The student language competition addresses an enormously important knowledge and cultural topic in the area of language and cultural diversity, especially for a target group that comes into contact with public service programming. In addition, the project is used nationwide through productions in different regional studios. A particular added value arises from the program's proximity to the educational and everyday world of young people. One would wish the production to be further professionalized with a higher production effort."
Univ.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Steinmaurer, University of Salzburg
"With the multilingual speech competition "Sag's Multi," ORF promotes social participation, diversity, and diversity of opinion. The contribution supervised by Michaela Mild highlights this format, which offers young people a stage to present socially relevant topics in multiple languages. In doing so, ORF makes diversity visible, strengthens intercultural dialogue, and underscores the importance of democratic values.
By having speakers speak in German and a second language, the competition shows that multilingualism is an enrichment, not a hindrance. It is part of Austrian identity and should be understood not as a demarcation but as a connection between cultures. The topics addressed-from human rights to equality to empathy-show that young people take on social responsibility not only linguistically but also in terms of content. This fulfills important public value principles by ORF fulfilling its role as an inclusive platform for all population groups. Especially in times of increasing polarization, the competition sets an important sign for openness and cohesion and thus sets a sign that diversity is a democratic value that must be promoted and protected."
Dr. Denise Voci B.A., M.A., University of Klagenfurt
Further contributions to the discourse on public service quality and the documentation of public value are published by ORF in the publication series "PUBLIC VALUE TEXTE." Over 300 scientists and media experts have published relevant views on the quality debate there. On the subject of the current public value category "Diversity," for example, the
contribution by Viktor Mayer-Schönberger from the University of Oxford, who states: "It is quite obvious what is urgently needed: to ensure diversity and decentralization in the economy and democracy. This requires sharpened competition law tools-such as a media antitrust law that deserves the name, or the progressive data sharing obligation I recently proposed; it requires a focus on ensuring content diversity beyond the filter (for example, by strengthening, not weakening, ORF's "public value" mandate). Even if it may not be in the NLP manual of the current ruling forces: Those who are confident enough face criticism honestly, openly, and without fear of it. Above all, it requires the insight that social diversity and individual freedom of choice are not sources of danger for the state and society, but the decisive foundations for a market economy and democracy that must be preserved, developed, and promoted. Those who do not understand this have simply fallen short politically."

Diversity as a Public Value Category
The category "Diversity" documents ORF's performance, among other things, in the perception of social, cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity. The category is based, among other things, on the following passages from
ORF regulations:
ORF Law
§ 4. (1) The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation must ensure the appropriate consideration of all age groups, the appropriate consideration of the concerns of families and children, and the equality of women and men, as well as the appropriate consideration of the significance of legally recognized churches and religious societies.
§ 4. (2) The offer must be oriented towards the diversity of interests of all listeners and viewers and consider them in a balanced manner.
§ 10. (6) The diversity of opinions represented in public life must be appropriately considered, and the dignity, personal rights, and privacy of individuals must be respected.
ORF Program Guidelines
In program design, all important social, political, social, economic, cultural, sports, scientific, intellectual, religious, and artistic developments must be considered. However, it is not enough to reproduce established views and directions; divergent or emerging developments must also be considered. Merely original problems cannot serve as justification for one-sided representation.
ORF Quality Profile
In terms of culture and religion, diversity is comprehensively interpreted in current reporting: Care is taken to let members of different religious communities-national and international-have their say. But non-believers in their engagement with the phenomenon of religion should also be given space. For culture, the following applies: In current reporting, reports on all art forms are possible, e.g., music and theater, literature and visual arts, film and architecture, design and dance, cabaret, and small art. In cultural reporting, there must also be room for "new" trends-even if they do not seem easily consumable.
Figures & Data
Below you will find exemplary numbers documenting the fulfillment of the public service mandate and the associated media quality. (Figures & Data only available in german.)
