"21 Tage ohne Handy" by Dr. Oliver Scheibenbogen, Mag. Fabian Scheck, and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Musalek. The study accompanied the project by Lisa Gadenstätter from "DOK1". She comments:
" ’21 Tage ohne Handy’ was an experiment by ‘DOK 1’ with a school in Gänserndorf. Many students voluntarily refrained from using their smartphones for three weeks, and we made a TV program out of it. The students who participated in 2025 felt significantly better after these three weeks. Depressive moods decreased, and mental well-being increased by 30%. In 2026, we repeated the experiment: Crucial was and is that this experiment does not work top-down. Young people are involved and trying it out. More than 72,000 young people signed up, and they are delighted when ORF visits. I believe that public service broadcasting has a great exemplary role. We do not prescribe what is good or bad; we allow everyone to form their own opinion."
FM4 also had a similar project in 2025 – the "Screen Time Challenge." Editor Michael Troll: “The ‘Screen Time Challenge,’
a cooperation between FM4 and Danube University Krems, pursued a clear goal: to reduce daily screen time to under two hours for three weeks – with the goal of finding a practical solution for more conscious smartphone consumption. The result: Less screen time on the smartphone can reduce stress, depressive symptoms, sleep problems, and loneliness by around 30%. At the same time, it shows how deeply we are permeated by information today – and how much our daily lives are controlled by it. This is what needs to be questioned. When social developments become problematic, it is the task of public service broadcasting to take a look and make these issues visible – not to deliver ready-made solutions, but to set impulses for how we actually want to live. FM4 created a playful framework for this in 2025 – as an impetus to rethink our handling of time and attention."

The question of the consequences of intensive smartphone use, particularly social media, was also explored by the Ö3 Youth Study: Most respondents can imagine social media being banned for youth, as shown by both the surveys in 2025 and in 2026.
