Identity: Why remember at all?

14% don't know what the Holocaust is – this dramatic realization about one of the worst crimes in human history, the systematic murder of Jews, dissidents, homosexuals, Roma, Sinti, and others in the Third Reich with the involvement of many Germans and Austrians – comes from a study by the "Claims Conference". What can ORF contribute to closing these knowledge gaps? Jürgen Pettinger, feature director at Ö1 and winner of numerous awards, including the Prof. Claus Gatterer Prize and the German dokKa Prize, is one of many colleagues documenting contemporary history at ORF: "I see myself in my journalistic work as a storyteller, and in this case, as a narrator of history. Regarding the Holocaust, it's only when we don't know too little or incorrect facts about our past that we can do better in the present or future. Even in private life, I learn from my own mistakes. As a child, I touched a hot stove and never did it again. So, even in personal life, one learns from their own history, from the actions of the past. And it must be the same for a society."

The work on contemporary history is just one aspect through which Austrian broadcasting negotiates Austrian identity. In the broadest sense, this includes, for example, its productions about Austrian ethnic groups; these are not only a natural service and offer for those whose native language is not German, but they also remind us of the diversity of Austria's population. Identity as a Public Value Category

The category "Identity" documents ORF's performance in Austrian contemporary history, tradition, customs, sports, and social development. The category is based on the following passages from ORF regulations:

ORF Law

§ 4. (1) The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation must ensure the promotion of Austrian identity in the context of European history and integration. (4) Furthermore, it must pay special attention to the cultural uniqueness, history, and political and cultural independence of Austria as well as the federal structure of the Republic in the production of radio and television programs and other offerings.


ORF Code of Conduct

The authenticity of the portrayal must be guaranteed in every case. Journalistically relevant circumstances for the creation of a contribution must be made recognizable: e.g., special conditions, circumstances, and developments during filming or when (due to trade secrets) material must be used that the person or institution to which the contribution refers has provided. The audience must be able to rely on the fact that any manipulative portrayal or staging is avoided in the reporting.

Austrian German as part of Austrian identity should be reflected in ORF entertainment formats, as well as gender-appropriate language as an act of equality between women and men.

Exemplary Figures

For ORF, documentaries and reports on contemporary history are a key part of its programming. For example, to mark the 80th anniversary of the Second Republic, Ö1’s oral history project invited listeners to share their family stories from the postwar period, thereby helping to preserve Austria’s collective memory of that time.

The latest installment of the “Remembering Together” series, which aired in January on ORF ON, explored the history of the First Republic. “Decades in Red-White-Red” continually reinterprets contemporary history, such as in the October 29 episode, “Army Under Pressure – Austria and Its Armed Forces.”
