Global Perspective: Which Facts Can Be Trusted?

The global climate crisis, climate change, hits Austria particularly hard. It is all the more important that the facts on the subject in reporting are reliable. "ZIB Magazin Klima" aims to provide continuously accurate information: "As a weekly format, 'ZIB Magazin Klima' continuously follows the most important developments of the climate crisis. The focus is on the viewers: I want to provide them with an understandable and constructive approach. Everyone should be able to participate in the social debate, with diverse perspectives," explains Ruth Hutsteiner from the editorial team. Marie-Therese Mürling adds: "Every topic is a climate topic, and it is essential to categorize them all. Every Saturday, we explain backgrounds, make research visible, and highlight concrete solutions. Because the climate crisis is already noticeable in Austria, it affects us all, and therefore everyone should be able to contribute. We want to provide fact-based information, explain understandably, and counteract fake news. Our topics range from technology and environmental impacts to everyday tips – beyond daily political debates."

ORF, with its reports from numerous countries, its extensive network of correspondents, the documentary series "UNIVERSUM," which focuses on flora and fauna, and the many different magazines, such as "Worldwide" or "WELTJournal," etc., is not only a "Fenster zur Welt" for people living in Austria but also an exporter of Austrian cultural assets. Through the European Broadcasting Union, millions of listeners are reached for concerts and operas from Austria, or other TV stations are enabled to broadcast Austrian contributions or documentaries.

Article 6 - Rights of the Parties at the National Level
(1) Within the framework of their cultural policy and cultural policy measures in the sense of Article 4 number 6 and taking into account their own particular circumstances and needs, each Party may adopt measures aimed at protecting and promoting the diversity of cultural expressions within its territory.

ORF Law

§ 4. (1) The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation is responsible for providing comprehensive information to the public on all important political, social, economic, cultural, and sports issues.

§ 4c. (1) The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation is to organize a television special-interest program that includes a comprehensive range of programs with informational or educational character as well as cultural programs. The special-interest program should equally address topics related to Austria as well as European and international topics.

ORF must bring both the foreign and the familiar closer to its audience. It should encourage appreciation of the familiar and interest in the new and unknown.


ORF Quality Profile

Since ORF also reports from war and crisis zones, it has a special responsibility to clearly separate possible propaganda or inflammatory rhetoric from the conflicting parties from factual information. Another responsibility is to not only highlight problems in other countries, such as famines or disasters, corruption, or violence, but also to make aspects that directly or indirectly affect Austria understandable. Particular attention should also be paid to highlighting positive and solution-oriented ideas and concepts.
